The New Balance story
The entry point into the whole New Balance catalog since 1988, the 574 pairs a suede-and-mesh upper with an ENCAP EVA midsole tuned for standing around all day rather than any particular running distance. This grey-and-beige pairing keeps the tonal palette the 574 platform is built around, still outselling many of the seasonal reissues that come after it, and the outsole now runs 5% recycled rubber content.
New Balance opened in Boston in 1906 making arch supports before turning to running shoes built around width and fit rather than a single mold. The company has stayed one of the few major athletic brands to keep meaningful manufacturing in the United States and United Kingdom, a fact stitched into its "Made in USA" grey label runs. Its 990 and 574 series turned dad-shoe comfort into a design language that dominates lifestyle sneaker culture today.
