The New Balance story
Originally a 2010 running shoe, the 2002R got pulled back into the lifestyle wall for its ABZORB midsole — a cushioning compound that trades some of ENCAP's firmness for more compression and a softer step-in feel. Rain Cloud's muted grey-teal palette reads closer to a technical running colorway than a retro reissue, which is exactly why it caught on outside the running crowd.
New Balance opened in Boston in 1906 making arch supports before turning to running shoes built around width and fit rather than a single mold. The company has stayed one of the few major athletic brands to keep meaningful manufacturing in the United States and United Kingdom, a fact stitched into its "Made in USA" grey label runs. Its 990 and 574 series turned dad-shoe comfort into a design language that dominates lifestyle sneaker culture today.
