The New Balance story
First released in 1989 as a low-cut basketball shoe, the 550 spent decades as a forgotten New Balance archive piece before being reissued as a retro lifestyle sneaker in recent years. The leather upper carries synthetic overlays at the ankle collar and logo area, a detail lifted straight from the original build.
New Balance opened in Boston in 1906 making arch supports before turning to running shoes built around width and fit rather than a single mold. The company has stayed one of the few major athletic brands to keep meaningful manufacturing in the United States and United Kingdom, a fact stitched into its "Made in USA" grey label runs. Its 990 and 574 series turned dad-shoe comfort into a design language that dominates lifestyle sneaker culture today.
