The Nike story

Nike SB took the 1985 basketball Dunk and rebuilt it for the street: a stitched-and-bonded cupsole in place of the original vulcanized build, a Zoom Air sockliner under the heel and forefoot, and suede placed only where grip tape actually makes contact. Canvas fills the recessed panels to keep weight down without giving up the deep pivot-circle tread that made the Dunk shape a skate-shop staple in the first place.

Founded in 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports by Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight, Nike grew from a car-trunk sneaker importer into the largest athletic brand on the planet. Its innovation lab has spent five decades chasing marginal gains, from the waffle outsole to full-length Air units to today's foam midsoles. Nike's catalog spans running, basketball, and lifestyle silhouettes worn as much on the street as on the track.
