The Jordan story
Tinker Hatfield's first Jordan design, the 1988 AJ3 introduced the elephant-print overlays and the Jumpman logo in the same release — a shoe Nike co-founder Phil Knight has credited with keeping Michael Jordan from leaving the brand. A visible heel Air-Sole unit and Hatfield's original tumbled-leather upper still define what a Jordan retro is supposed to look like, and the Rust Pink pairing carries the same elephant-print detailing in a warmer, less common finish.
Jordan Brand began in 1984 when Nike signed a rookie guard from North Carolina and built a shoe around his game. What started as the Air Jordan I grew into its own division in 1997, spinning off basketball, retro, and lifestyle lines that now outsell most standalone sneaker companies. The brand's language of leather, patent accents, and Jumpman branding has become shorthand for basketball culture itself.
