The Jordan story
Patent leather across the foxing was unheard of on a basketball shoe when this dropped in 1995 — stiffer and lighter than the tumbled leathers it replaced, and paired with a polymer-coated ballistic mesh strong enough to survive full-speed cuts. A full-length carbon-fiber spring plate, visible through the translucent outsole at the midfoot, is what actually let Jordan play in these instead of just wearing them off the court.
Jordan Brand began in 1984 when Nike signed a rookie guard from North Carolina and built a shoe around his game. What started as the Air Jordan I grew into its own division in 1997, spinning off basketball, retro, and lifestyle lines that now outsell most standalone sneaker companies.
